Here are a few tips on
securing your business location.
- If you have a storefront, is it well lit at
night?
- Do your staff policies require at least two
people to open or close?
- Does staff exit the building with a companion
whenever possible?
- Is your parking lot well lit at night?
- Do employees keep their cars locked at all times?
- Do you have a policy for threatening situations?
Take the time to discuss these issues with all personnel.
- Don't resist if the attacker is only after
property or has a weapon.
- If you decide to resist, don't get scared, get
MAD! Shout "NO", "STOP", or "CALL THE POLICE!" Try to incapacitate
the assailant long enough to escape.
- Try to get an accurate description of the
attacker, color of eyes and hair, type of clothing, height, weight,
sex, and any unusual features such as scars or a tattoo.
- If a vehicle is involved get the license number
and direction of travel.

- Is the door itself of metal or solid
wood?
- Are door hinges protected from
removal from the outside?
- Are there windows in the door or
within 40 inches of the locks?
- Are the door locks adequate and in
good repair?
- Are strikes and strike plates
adequate and properly installed?
- If there are no windows in the door,
is there a wide angle viewer or voice intercommunications device?
- Can the lock mechanism be reached
through a mail slot, delivery port or pet entrance at the doorway?
- Is there a screen or storm door with
an adequate lock?
- Is the exterior or front entrance
lit with at least a 40 watt bulb?
- Can front entrances be observed from
the street or public areas?
- Does the porch or landscaping offer
concealment from view from a street or public area?
- Do any upper floor windows open onto
porch or garage roofs?
- Is there a door from the outside to
the basement?
- Is the garage door kept locked at
all times?
- Are tools and ladders kept in the
garage at all times?
- Are smoke and heat detectors
adequate?
- Are ground floor windows properly
locked or blocked?
